Most of our week happens within a few miles of here. If you call in the morning from Centennial Hills, Aliante, Lone Mountain or Tule Springs, there is a genuine chance we are at your door in the afternoon. That is harder to promise in Henderson and honest to say out loud.

It also means small jobs are worth booking. A single set of stairs or one bedroom is often not worth a company's drive time from across the valley. From here it is.

Newer builds, lighter carpet

Aliante and the Centennial Hills developments went up largely from the 2000s onward, and they came with pale, low-pile builder carpet. It wears well and it hides nothing. The path from the garage door through to the family room is usually the first thing to go, and it is usually recoverable in one visit.

The other pattern here is stairs. A lot of these homes are two-storey with carpeted flights, and stair noses take more punishment per square foot than anything else in the house. They get done by hand tool, not a wand.

• The annual reset. Light carpet, once a year, before the holidays or after a summer of doors opening and closing.
• New arrivals. Houses change hands often out here. Cleaning before you move furniture in is the cheapest version of the job, because empty rooms take a fraction of the time.
